HOYLE:

Edmond Hoyle was an eighteenth century writer who set down the rules of many popular card games. Because of this, the phrase "according to Hoyle" came to mean "the official authority on...". Hoyle was writing before Poker was known in England, so he couldn't create a set of official rules for the game. However a set of official rules has since developed, and these are the rules "according to Hoyle" i.e. the standard reference to consult in the event of any dispute. View the Official Poker Rules According To Hoyle.
